Peter W. Moss/NSCS Media 8/18/07 Steven Gannon continued a family tradition, on Saturday night, winning the North State Challenge Series presented by Scottfeild Executive Hotels 100 lap event at Shasta Raceway Park. Piloting the familiar red on white Blaisdell Construction #75, formerly driven by his father Roger, the young Redding driver passed race-long leader David Miller on the 44th lap and fended off fast qualifier Randy Houston’s lap 74 bid for the lead. Houston got under Gannon and they went door to door for two laps before Houston spun to the infield, losing a lap before he could get restarted. Mike Doss equaled his best career SRP finish of second, ahead of Howard Ford. Ford had passed Doss on lap 91 only to have the pass negated when the yellow flag flew and the running order reverted to the previous lap. Early leader Dave Miller was fourth and Junior Roddy came home fifth after struggling with an ill-handling car. “We got lucky tonight,” said the happy winner. “We really had, probably, a second place car. Randy’s car was really fast! After he spun, I didn’t have to drive the car so hard. It was fun and I’m beat!” said Gannon, who did double duty, running the local late model 40-lapper immediately before the NSCS main event. He finished second in the late model main, ending his record streak of 10 consecutive wins. “I kind of used up my car trying to get by him,” Houston said, “then I got on the brakes a little too hard and it went around! We had a good car tonight but I just didn’t get it done. Steven’s a good racer and it was his night.” Houston was scored eighth in the final rundown. “I’m not going to complain about second,” said Doss, who scored his sixth top-five in seven races. “I had the best car I’ve ever had here and I made the dash so it was a pretty good night for us.” “Our car was good but not great,” said point leader Ford, who lost one point to Doss in the championship chase. “I thought we had, at least, a second place car but I guess third isn’t too bad.” Ford leads Doss by 137 points with two races to go. Next up for the NSCS is the Fall Spectacular at Redwood Acres Raceway on September 28th and 29th. Fast Time – Randy Houston 15.904 Dash – Howard Ford, Mike Doss, Randy Houston, Steven Gannon Main – Steven Gannon, Mike Doss, Howard Ford, David Miller, Junior Roddy, Dane Nissen, Riley Watson, Randy Houston, Jim Stillman Jr, Kent Black, Randy Stutesman, Sean Hays, Allen Gibney Jr, Hank Hilton, Keith Marson, Kyle Pope Random Notes Dane Nissen subbed for Mic Moulton in the #1 Fastenal ride this week after working all week to fix the damage from Mic’s Lakeport wreck. Ryan Foster was there to lend a hand and Dane kept him pretty busy! After struggling with a loose off condition and brake issues all afternoon, Dane nosed it into the wall on his second qualifying lap and they went about rebuilding the front end again. They got it fixed, Dane started 10th and struggled to a 6th place finish after losing the brakes late in the race. “These things aren’t much fun to drive with no brakes,” he said after the race. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone work so hard, for a mediocre finish, and have so much fun doing it! It’s great to see you behind the wheel, Dane, and having fun! The Portland area Marson Racing team joined us with two cars. Unfortunately, they suffered a main seal leak on son Keith’s #14 car and DNS. Keith drove his Dad, Jeff’s #13 ride and was caught up in a lap 9 incident and retired. We were glad to have you guys join us and we hope you’ll give the NSCS a try again. The Marson’s race a busy schedule of Oregon dirt races, and also sprinkle in a few pavement races. They have a nice website at www.marsonracingteam.com Dave Miller had a pretty good car this week and led most of the first half of the race. “ The car started plowing after about 20 laps,” he said, “ and I really should’ve stopped to adjust it, but I was the leader! Fourth is OK but I really don’t care about top five finishes. I come to win these things!” It was his 3rd top-five in five starts. Sean Hays qualified well and was running well, in second place, when he was black flagged for an oil leak and retired. It was good to see you out there, Sean! Randy Stutesman retired on lap 56 after contact with Riley Watson. Watson struggled, and has, since his car was wrecked at Ukiah. “Something’s not right and we haven’t found it yet. I’m not sure if the car will ever be as good as we had it before Ukiah.” He is leading the Victory Circle Rookie of the Year points. Allen Gibney Jr. and Kyle Pope each suffered hard crashes that may spell the end of their seasons. Luckily, we have a 5-week break in the schedule and if there’s any way they can fix their cars, I hope they do! Don’t be surprised if we see either Roger or Steven Gannon in one or both of the final races at RAR and SRP. Hank Hilton suffered damage in a lap 15 incident. Hank was fine but the car was done. Junior Roddy was the Joiner Motorsports Hard Charger of the race for the second time this year. Riley Watson earned his fifth Victory Circle Rookie of the Race award. I’ll see you at the races!
